Inaugurated in 1913 after twelve years of construction, this castle-like landmark is a striking example of eclectic historicism. Because the building was erected on marshy ground near the Maschpark, it had to be anchored on exactly 6,026 heavy beechwood piles. Today, it is globally famous not only for its grand dome but also for its unique parabolic elevator, which climbs at a steep 17-degree angle to the observation platform.
