Commissioned by Elector Augustus III and designed by Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri between 1739 and 1755, the Katholische Hofkirche (Cathedral of the Holy Trinity) is the largest church building in Saxony. Standing proudly on the banks of the Elbe near the Semperoper and Zwinger, its striking exterior is famously adorned with 78 towering stone statues of saints and apostles created by Lorenzo Mattielli. Like many of Dresden’s historic monuments, the cathedral was heavily damaged in 1945 and meticulously restored to its former glory.
