Leuchtturm List West: Germany’s Northernmost Sentinel
Situated on the pristine Ellenbogen peninsula of Sylt, the List West Lighthouse holds the unique distinction of being the absolute northernmost building in Germany. Constructed in 1857 under Danish rule alongside its twin, List Ost, it represents a milestone in maritime engineering as one of the oldest cast-iron lighthouses on the German North Sea coast.
Easily distinguished from its eastern counterpart by its pure white tower topped with a striking, solid red lantern house, List West was historically fueled by colza oil before being electrified. Today, this remote, heritage-protected beacon continues to guide seafarers through the shifting sandbanks of the Lister Tief.
