The Marktkirche: A Neo-Gothic Landmark
Dominating the Wiesbaden skyline, the Marktkirche—often called the Nassauer Landesdom—is a masterpiece of 19th-century romantic historicism. Following the destruction of the medieval Mauritiuskirche by fire in 1850, architect Carl Boos was commissioned to design a new, monumental protestant main church. Constructed between 1853 and 1862, the building stands as the Duchy of Nassau’s largest brick structure, requiring approximately 6.5 million bricks to complete.
Distinguished by its dramatic silhouette of five towers, the Marktkirche reflects the ambition of an up-and-coming world spa town. While its structure was severely damaged during WWII in 1945, the church was reconstructed and reopened in 1948, serving today as a vital architectural monument of national cultural importance and the religious heart of the Hessian capital.
